confirmed as Spring friendly opposition...20/12/2009
FAI Chief Executive John Delaney this evening confirmed that the
Republic of Ireland will meet Brazil
on Wednesday 3rd March 2010 in a friendly international.
Speculation surrounding the location for the match continues, with
Croke Park, Glasgow, London
and Manchester all being touted
as possible options. While the fixture occurs during a crucial club period,
it is likely that Giovanni Trapattoni will
view the contest as stage one on the EURO 2012 campaign.
Ledger fallout disappointing for Ireland...19/12/2009
Recent media reports concerning the apparent falling out between Sean
St Ledger and new Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan
spell not only disappointment for the parties involved but also for Ireland.
The mooted friendly against Brazil is in essence the start of preparations
for EURO 2012 and Giovanni Trapattoni would surely be setting
his plans in motion for the campaign. Should St Ledger find himself in limbo
at his club, it will be disappointing for both him and Ireland, although it
might herald the introduction of Marc Wilson who has been
impressive in central defence for improving Premiership side Portsmouth. With
central defence in mind, the loan move of Darren O'Dea from
Glasgow Celtic to Reading has, after a bright early start, turned into disappointment
with the young defender spending much of his time on the bench.
of Ireland managerial merry-go-round ...19/12/2009
The annual managerial turnaround in the League of Ireland is again in gentle
swing. The departure of Paul Doolin from Cork City
was perhaps no surprise as the current situation within the club does not
bode well for the future. There was some surprise at the departure of Ian
Foster from Galway United to take up the reins vacated
by Sean Connor at Dundalk while the confirmation
of Pete Mahon as manager with John Gill as his assistant
at St Patrick's Athletic was less so.

Conroy - Special Meeting Guest
We were delighted to welcome Stoke City and Republic of Ireland legend Terry
Conroy to our meeting last Friday evening. Terry was capped twenty
six times by Ireland and was the scorer of the opening goal in our WC qualifying
defeat of France, in November 1972. Highlight of his club career was of
course the 1972 League Cup Final victory at Wembley, where he opened the
scoring and later created the winning goal for his team. Terry was appointed
UK Welfare Officer for the FAI in November 2008 and both members and guests
listened to his analysis of his first year in that significant position.
The audience was further captivated by Terry's many tales from his days
flying the flank for both Stoke City and Ireland.
