Trapattoni announces 23 man squad for Serbia...20/07/2012
Manager Giovanni Trapattoni today announced his Republic of Ireland squad for the friendly international against Serbia in Belgrade on 15 August 2012, at a press conference in Ballybofey. The temporary exclusion of senior quartet Shay Given, Richard Dunne, Damian Duff and Robbie Keane while somewhat unexpected, is welcome as it will afford preparatory playing time to a younger quartet. The absence of Stephen Hunt would suggest a more permanent exclusion, while Kevin Foley declined the call up at this juncture. Under 21 players Robbie Brady and Shane Duffy were namechecked, but were excluded because our U21 side have a UEFA Championship encounter with Turkey in Sligo the previous evening. The return of James McCarthy, and an indication he would start in Belgrade, is welcome as is the inclusion of Marc Wilson in the defensive unit. The clamour for the inclusion of Wesley Hoolihan was always likely to fall on deaf ears but the omission of Ciaran Clark and Alex Pearce is perhaps of greater disappointment.

Teenager Sweeney kicks off Reading career in style...11/07/2012
A decidedly damp and dismal July evening in Didcot may not have been the location of choice for your new club debut, but seventeen year old central defender Pierce Sweeney rose above the elements and the opposition forwards in his debut for Reading on Tuesday evening. While but a friendly against lower non-league opposition, the composure and performance of the former Bray Wanderers and Belvedere defender augers well for his future football career.

U21 candidate Sheppard embarks on season of hope...11/07/2012
Former Galway United and Shamrock Rovers striker Karl Sheppard scored his first Reading goal in the club's opening pre-season friendly at Didcot Town on Tuesday evening. Sheppard, who joined 'The Royals' on a two and a half year contract in January of this year, has been a member of Noel King's Ireland Under 21 squad and is targeting selection for the squad to face Turkey in the UEFA Championship qualifier in Sligo on Tuesday the 14th August 2012.

Royals continue to unearth potential Irish diamonds...11/07/2012
The affinity between Ireland and Reading FC continues to prosper and manager Brian McDermott, whose parents hailed from Clare and Sligo respectively, together with Academy Manager Eamonn Dolan, a man with Galway roots, maintain their strong affinity with Irish footballers. The tale surrounding the signing of Kevin Doyle and Shane Long is well known and what a return that duo provided. The squad which won the Championship last season and embarks on a Premiership campaign next month has Ian Harte, Noel Hunt and Jay Tabb in it's midst and who knows if emerging teenage left back Shane Griffin, another young man discovered down in Cork, can someday lend another chapter to this enduring tale.
