The English Championship will kick-off on Saturday 3 August 2013 and the opening fixtures are likely to feature several Irish candidates aiming for inclusion in the Under 21 squad set for action on Wednesday 14 August 2013. Head Coach Noel King will take his squad to the Faroe Islands for their opening fixture in the 2015 UEFA U21 Championship qualifying campaign and may have a keen eye on the meeting of Birmingham City and Watford, where Callum Reilly for the hosts, together with Sean Murray, Tommie Hoban and Connor Smith of the visitors, will be hoping to be in action. John O'Sullivan made his league debut for Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season and will be aiming to maintain his progress as his club visit Derby County on Sunday afternoon. Eyes will also focus on QPR, who host Sheffield Wednesday, where Michael Harriman and Frankie Sutherland will be targeting first team action this season.

International contenders set for Championship start...19/06/2013
Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni could make an opening weekend pilgrimage to the English Championship on Saturday 3 August 2013. Derby County was a popular destination last season and the opportunity to cast an eye over Jeff Hendrick, Richard Keogh and Conor Sammon against Blackburn Rovers in the Sunday fixture may appeal. On the opening Saturday, a viewing of Simon Cox in a central striking role for Nottingham Forest, who host Huddersfield Town, may have merit. Indeed a look at, perhaps even a quiet chat with Andy Reid might also prove rewarding.

Ireland go down to defeat by Spain in New York...12/06/2013
A much depleted Ireland went down to a two nil defeat by a full strength Spain in New York on Tuesday evening. The contest, at the end of a long and arduous season, had nothing save pride at stake, but the match fee will be welcome back in Abbotstown. The players, as ever, performed with great resolution and the experience should benefit the younger brigade. Ireland offered brave resistence until the seventieth minute and did not concede the second goal until three minutes from time.

Hat-trick hero Robbie Keane leads Ireland to victory...07/06/2013
Giovanni Trapattoni saw his captain Robbie Keane score a hat-trick in this evening's World Cup qualifiying contest against the Faroe Islands in the Aviva Stadium. The goals take the Tallaght man on to 59 in his international career on the night he became our record cap holder with 126 senior appearances. The opening goal came after five minutes when Keane turned home a low cross from Aiden McGeady and looked to be the forerunner to an evening of quality and joy. It was not to be however. On a gorgeous evening swathed in sparkling sunshine, Ireland failed to build on their fine start and did not excite. They created very little, save for a few exciting runs from McGeady, but even they had no end product. The second half mirrored the first with Keane again on the end of a low cross, this time from Seamus Coleman, to score the second, ten minutes after the break. Again, there was little by way of quality follow-up, indeed laboured most closely describes the activity. With some fifteen minutes remaining, Connor Sammon replaced the ineffective Jon Walters, while James McClean came on for a tiring McGeady. Ten minutes from time, Keane completed his hat-trick with another close in conversion of a low McClean cross which Sammon re-directed, to complete the 3-0 victory.
