The 2021 Airtricity League season kicked off this Friday evening with the President’s Cup opener between League Champions Shamrock Rovers and FAI Cup Winners Dundalk in a wet and windy Tallaght Stadium. There was very little love lost between the sides in a quite lively and robust encounter. There were some excellent passages of play from both sides with the ‘Lilywhites’ taking a one goal lead three minutes before the half-time break courtesy of a fine header from giant Faroe Islands defender Sonni Nattestad. The ‘Hoops’ equalised three minutes into the second half with a clinically taken goal from defender Liam Scales. Thereafter the quality of play decreased and the harsh dismissal of Nattestad on 59 minutes saw the ‘Hoops’ dominate but Dundalk stayed defensively steadfast and held out to send the contest to a penalty shoot-out. The ‘Lilywhites’ then took the Trophy on a four three scoreline.
