Dundalk in Europa League action…22/10/2020

Dundalk kicked-off their Europa League Group B campaign with a two one defeat by Molde of Norway in Tallaght Stadium this Thursday evening. In the other Group B contest between Rapid Vienna and Arsenal, the visiting ‘Gunners’ emerged victorious by two goals to one in the Weststadion. 

In Group H, Glasgow Celtic (Shane Duffy) went down to a three one home defeat by AC Milan, conquerers of Shamrock Rovers in the qualifying round. Glasgow Rangers travelled to Standard Liege in Group D and secured a two nil victory. Leicester City hosted Zorya Luhansk of the Ukraine in Group G and were three nil victors while Tottenham Hotspur (Matt Doherty) secured the same winning margin as they defeated visiting Austrian side LASK in Group J.

Ireland to face England at Wembley…21/10/2020

It has just been announced that Ireland will face England in a closed doors friendly international at Wembley Stadium on Thursday the 12th November 2020. Ireland had been scheduled to meet Bosnia & Herzegovina while England were due to host New Zealand but both countries sought cancellations in light of the current Covid-19 situation.

With Ireland due to meet Wales in Cardiff on Sunday the 15th November in the Nations League they will base themselves in the UK during the build up period to both matches.

They will return to Abbotstown for the remaining Nations League match at Home to Bulgaria on Wednesday the 18th November 2020.

Midweek in the Championship and EFL…21/10/2020

Tuesday
The Championship continued on Tuesday evening for early pacesetters Bristol City but their Irish duo Callum O’Dowda and Max O’Leary  both remained on the substitute bench for the one nil defeat by visitors Middlesbrough at Ashton Gate. Midfielder Jason Knight was in action for struggling Derby County who went down to a one nil defeat at Huddersfield Town. Adam Idah was a 69th minute substitute for Norwich City who defeated visitors Birmingham City by one goal to nil. New manager Chris Hughton saw his Nottingham Forest play out a one all draw with Rotherham United at the City Ground. Cyrus Christie started with Harry Arter a 74th minute substitute for the hosts while Kieran Sadlier was a 76th minute substitute for the visitors. Deadline day signing Ryan Manning was unused on the Swansea City substitute bench as the ‘Swans’ played out a one all draw against Coventry City in their temporary home at St Andrew’s, Birmingham. Early league leaders Reading defeated visitors Wycombe Wanderers and Daryl Horgan by one goal to nil. 

U21 defender Thomas O’Connor, on loan from Southampton, was in the Gillingham side for their two nil League One defeat by visitors Portsmouth for whom Ronan Curtis was a 74th minute substitute. Goalkeepers Kieran O’Hara and Gavin Bazunu were in opposition when Burton Albion lost to the only goal from visitors Rochdale while Jack Taylor and his Peterborough United colleagues secured the points with a one nil victory at Wigan Athletic.

Glasgow Celtic loanee Lee O’Connor was in League Two action with Tranmere Rovers who lost to the only goal from visitors Leyton Orient while Rotherham United loanee Joshua Kayode and loan club Carlisle United played out a one all draw at Oldham Athletic.

Wednesday
There was more Championship action on Wednesday evening with Conor Masterson an unused substitute for QPR who went down to a two nil defeat by visitors Preston North End for whom Alan Browne started and Sean Maguire was an 84th minute substitute at Loftus Road. Daragh Lenihan was in the Blackburn Rovers side which went down to a three one defeat at Watford. Nathan Collins started in the Stoke City defence for the two all draw with visitors Barnsley but was dismissed on 60 minutes at the BET 365 Stadium. Goalkeeper Mark Travers was an unused substitute for AFC Bournemouth who played out a one all draw at Cardiff City.

 

Overseas Irish set for weekend action…18/10/2020

Friday
Following his senior international debut on Wednesday afternoon, Jason Knight was in action with his Championship club Derby County who went down to a one nil defeat by visitors Watford in Pride Park this Friday evening.

U21 striker Jonathan Afolabi, on loan from Glasgow Celtic, was a half-time substitute for loan club Dundee who suffered a crushing  6-2 defeat in their opening Scottish Championship fixture at Heart of Midlothian this Friday evening.

Saturday
Seamus Coleman started for early season Premier League pacesetters Everton but suffered a recurrence of his injury and was substituted after 31 minutes of their two all draw with defending champions and Merseyside rivals Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. Shane Long was an 86th minute substitute for Southampton who shocked hosts Chelsea with a very late equaliser to earn a three all draw at Stamford Bridge while Michael Obafemi was an unused substitute. On Saturday evening, Jeff Hendrick started for Newcastle United who went down to a four one defeat by visitors Manchester United.  

Shane Duffy was in Scottish Premiership action with Glasgow Celtic who suffered a two nil home defeat by bitter rivals Glasgow Rangers early on Saturday afternoon in Celtic Park. Later in the afternoon U21 defender Danny McNamara, on loan from Millwall, was in action with St Johnstone who defeated hosts Hamilton Academical by five goals to three.

Callum O’Dowda was an 85th minute substitute for Bristol City who played out a two all Championship draw at Barnsley with O’Dowda conceding the last minute penalty which earned the hosts a draw. Chris Hughton got his managerial post at Nottingham Forest off to a winning start with an 90th minute winner over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Daragh Lenihan started for the hosts while Cyrus Christie started and Harry Arter was a 50th minute substitute for the victors. Stoke City included Nathan Collins in their starting eleven for their two nil victory at Luton Town while Adam Idah was in the Norwich City side which secured  a two one victory at Rotherham United for whom Kieran Sadlier was an unused substitute. International returnee Daryl Horgan was a 66th minute substitute for Wycombe Wanderers who went down to a two one defeat by visitors Millwall for whom Troy Parrott continues to be an injury casualty.

U21 midfielder Jack Taylor was in the Peterborough United side which defeated visitors Oxford United by two goals to nil in League OneRonan Curtis started for Portsmouth but was withdrawn on 59 minutes of their one nil home defeat by visitors Doncaster Rovers while Gavin Bazunu and loan club Rochdale went down to a three nil home defeat by visitors Hull City.

U21 striker Joshua Kayode was in loan club Carlisle United’s side for their three two League Two victory over visitors Colchester United while Lee O’Connor started for loan club Tranmere Rovers in their one nil defeat at Newport County. 

Sunday
John Egan, Enda Stevens and David McGoldrick were in Premier League action with Sheffield United who played out a one all draw with visitors Fulham at Bramall Lane early on Sunday afternoon. Aaron Connolly was a 78th minute substitute for Brighton & Hove Albion who scored an added time equaliser to earn a point at Crystal Palace.  Matt Doherty was an unused substitute for  Tottenham Hotspur who, having been comfortably in command and leading by three goals to nil, were reined in by visitors West Ham United who scored three times in the final ten minutes to earn a draw. Darren Randolph was an unused substitute for the ‘Hammers’. Conor Hourihane was an unused substitute for Aston Villa who scored  the only goal in the final minutes of this evening’s encounter with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium to maintain their 100% winning start to the season.

Preston North End duo Alan Browne and Sean Maguire were both in Championship action at mid-day on Sunday when visitors Cardiff City scored the only goal for victory at Deepdale. There was however bitter disappointed for the ‘Blues’ Greg Cunningham who was forced off through injury after just 29 minutes. The Galway native has suffered a whole series of injury problems throughout his career.

Monday
Midweek international debutant Dara O’Shea was an unused substitute for West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Monday afternoon while Callum Robinson was a 73rd minute substitute as they played out a scoreless draw with visitors Burnley for whom Kevin Long was in central defence with Robbie Brady a 69th minute substitute and  Jimmy Dunne unused on the substitute bench.

Airtricity League First Division…20/10/2020

The Airtricity League First Division enters the final stages with the promotion and play-off stakes still very much in the balance.

The confirmation on Wednesday, that Wexford had been found guilty of fielding an ineligible player in four matches has resulted in an amendment to the League Table.  The matches with original scores were Athlone Town (1-3), Cabinteely (0-0), Cobh Ramblers (4-0), Shamrock Rovers II (2-0).  The disciplinary committee has revised the Athlone, Cabinteely and Shamrock Rovers results to 3-0 wins for each club while Cobh retain their 4-0 scoreline.

Second place Drogheda United were set to welcome bottom side Wexford to United Park on Friday evening but the fixture has been postponed following a positive Covid-19 test within the Wexford camp. UCD and Cabinteely went head to head in The Bowl where the ‘Students’ crushed their visitors by five goals to one.

Two more contenders, Longford Town and Cobh Ramblers, met in Bishopsgate on Saturday evening where the visitors scored the only goal for victory while earlier in the afternoon Shamrock Rovers II came from behind to defeat visitors Athlone Town by three goals to one in Tallaght Stadium.

Drogheda United were back in action on Tuesday evening when they visited Eamonn Deacy Park and defeated hosts Galway United by three goals to one.
