Irish in midweek football action…12/02/2020

Wednesday
Championship
The Championship continued on Wednesday night with current leaders West Bromwich Albion coming from behind to defeat hosts Reading by two goals to one and extend their lead at the summit to six points. Both Dara O’Shea and loanee Callum Robinson were in their starting eleven for the victors. Bristol City defeated visitors Derby County by three goals to two with Callum O’Dowda a 78th minute substitute for the hosts while Jason Knight was unused on the visitors bench. James Collins scored the only goal for struggling Luton Town who defeated Sheffield Wednesday at Kenilworth Road. The London Derby meeting of Millwall and Fulham at the new Den ended in a one all draw with Jayson Molumby and Alex Pearce starting for the hosts and Aiden O’Brien an unused substitute while Harry Arter started for the visitors with Cyrus Christie unused on the substitute bench. James McClean started for Stoke City with Nathan Collins unused on the substitute bench as they went down to a two nil home defeat by Preston North End for whom Alan Browne opened the scoring while Sean Maguire was substituted after 57 minutes.  

Tuesday
Championship
The Championship journey continued on Tuesday night with Birmingham City loanee Scott Hogan scoring the only goal for the ‘Blues’ as they defeated their hosts Barnsley. Daragh Lenihan opened the scoring for Blackburn Rovers as they atoned for their weekend home defeat by Fulham with a three nil victory over visitors Hull City for whom Saturday’s debutant Sean McLoughlin retained his ‘Tigers’ starting position. Promotion challengers Nottingham Forest went down to a surprise one nil home defeat by Charlton Athletic for whom  Josh Cullen was in his regular midfield position with loanee Aiden McGeady a 59th minute substitute. Ryan Manning returned to the QPR starting eleven but Conor Masterson dropped to the substitute bench  for their scoreless draw at Swansea City.

League One
Ireland U21 players Connor Ronan and Thomas O’Connor were in action  with their loan clubs, Blackpool and Gillingham, with the visitors prevailing by three goals to two at Bloomfield Road. Kieran O’Hara and Conor Shaughnessy started for Burton Albion who played out a two all draw with visitors Oxford United for whom Liam Kelly started but was forced off through injury after 20 minutes. Coventry City scored the only goal to defeat Portsmouth and Ronan Curtis at their temporary St Andrew’s base. The Ireland U21 duo of Conor Coventry and Anthony Scully were introduced from the Lincoln City substitute bench during the second half of their one all draw with visitors MK Dons. Ireland U21 midfielder Jack Taylor scored his first goal for Peterborough United in their four nil victory over Southend United at London Road. Glenn Whelan and Paddy Madden started for Fleetwood Town with Madden scoring the only goal against their hosts Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.  

Irish in weekend League and Cup action…09/02/2020

Sunday
John Egan and Enda Stevens both started for Sheffield United with fit again David McGoldrick on the substitute bench for their Premier League encounter with visitors AFC Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon. The ‘Blades’ came from behind to secure a two one victory which moves them up to fifth place on the league Table.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was believed to be in attendance at the New Den on Sunday afternoon when Millwall played host to current Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion. Jayson Molumby, Shaun Williams and Aiden O’Brien started for the ‘Lions’ with Alex Pearce unused on the substitute bench while Dara O’Shea and loan signing Callum Robinson were named in the visitors starting eleven. In very difficult conditions the visiting ‘Baggies’ secured a deserved two nil victory to extend their lead at the summit to four points. The day was particularly memorable for Ireland U21 defender O’Shea who capped another fine display in an unfamiliar right back position with the second goal, his first for the club. For the hosts, his Ireland U21 captain Molumby produced another fine midfield display. 

Saturday
Shane Duffy returned to the Brighton & Hove Albion starting eleven for their one all Premier League draw with visitors Watford on Saturday afternoon while Aaron Connolly was an unused substitute for the hosts. The early kick-off saw club captain Seamus Coleman return to the Everton starting eleven as they defeated visitors Crystal Palace by three goals to one at Goodison Park. James McCarthy was again in the starting eleven for Palace but was withdrawn on 68 minutes.

Alan Browne and Sean Maguire both started for Preston North End who secured a two one Championship victory in the early kick-off at Wigan Athletic. Cyrus Christie was an unused substitute for Fulham who defeated hosts Blackburn Rovers, captained by Daragh Lenihan, with the only goal at Ewood Park. Derrick Williams was an unused substitute for the home side. Conor Masterson was again in central defence for QPR who went down to a two nil defeat at Huddersfield Town while Ryan Manning was an unused substitute. James Collins was in the Luton Town which went went down to the only goal from Cardiff City at Kenilworth Road. James McClean opened the scoring for Stoke City who defeated visitors Charlton Athletic and Josh Cullen by three goals to one. Defender Nathan Collins was an unused substitute for the victorious ‘Potters’. Jason Knight started for Derby County who secured a three two victory at Swansea City but was withdrawn on 61 minutes. Former Cork City centre back Sean McLoughlin, who was on loan with Scottish Premiership side St Mirren during the first half of the season, made his Championship debut for Hull City in their one all draw at Reading this afternoon. 

Glenn Whelan was in the Fleetwood Town side which secured a two one League One victory at AFC Wimbledon where 65th minute substitute Paddy Madden scored the winning goal. Kieran O’Hara kept a clean sheet for Burton Albion in their scoreless draw with visitors Gillingham who included Thomas O’Connor in their starting eleven. Jack Taylor was in midfield for Peterborough United who defeated visitors Oxford United by four goals to nil at London Road where Liam Kelly was a 67th minute substitute for the visitors. Ronan Curtis was in action for Portsmouth who secured a two nil victory over their hosts Tranmere Rovers. Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee  Connor Ronan was named ‘man of the match’ for Blackpool in their two one victory over Southend United this afternoon.

Transfer window signings Conor McCarthy and Jamie McGrath started  for St Mirren who drew one each with visitors Motherwell in the fifth round of the Scottish FA Cup.

Friday
Transfer window loan signing Scott Hogan scored the opening goal for Birmingham City in their three one victory over Bristol City in the Championship at Ashton Gate on Friday evening. Callum O’Dowda was an unused substitute fir the defeated hosts.

There was disappointment for U21 internationals Conor Coventry and Zack Elbouzedi in League One on Friday evening as the West Ham United loanee was an unused substitute while the Dubliner was excluded from the Lincoln City matchday squad. The ‘Imps’ went down to a one nil home defeat by League leaders Rotherham United for whom Chiedoze Ogbene was in midfield action while Trevor Clarke was an unused substitute. Anthony Scully, who joined Lincoln in midweek from West Ham United, was a 72nd minute substitute.

FA Cup fourth round replays…05/02/2020

Wednesday
The one remaining FA Cup fourth round replay between Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton took place at the Stadium in White Hart Lane this Wednesday evening and saw the hosts progress with a hard fought three two victory. Troy Parrott was an unused substitute for the victors while Shane Long started and scored for the visitors with Michael Obafemi and Will Smallbone unused on the substitute Bench.

In the Scottish Premiership, transfer window signings Conor McCarthy and Jamie McGrath both started for St Mirren, who are managed by Jim Goodwin, in their one all draw with visitors Hamilton Academical.

Tuesday
The FA Cup fourth round replay between Derby County and League Two side Northampton Town took place at Pride Park this Tuesday evening where Jason Knight was a 69th minute substitute for the hosts who prevailed by four goals to two. Loanee Liam Kelly was introduced from the Oxford United substitute bench on 62 minutes and scored an excellent free kick in their three two extra-time defeat by visitors Newcastle United who introduced Ciaran Clark from their substitute bench on 97 minutes while Rob Elliot was an unused substitute. With manager Jurgen Klopp and the first team squad on their winter break, Liverpool included Caomihin Kelleher in their starting eleven for their one nil victory over League One side Shrewsbury Town who included on loan goalkeeper Max O’Leary in their starting eleven.

U15s lose final Pinatar Cup contest…03/02/2020

Our U15 side went down to a two nil defeat by the Czech Republic in their final contest of the Pinatar Cup in Murcia this afternoon. We conceded two first half goals and while we created a number of half chances and one we should have converted, the Czech side deserved their victory. While disappointed to lose all three contests, Head Coach Jason Donohue will take a number of positives from the games  against three top flight nations.

Jeff Hendrick starts with Robbie Brady and Kevin Long on the substitute bench for Burnley who play host to Arsenal in the  Premier League on Sunday afternoon. 


Saturday
John Egan and Enda Stevens were both in Premier League action with Sheffield United this Saturday afternoon when they travelled to Selhurst Park and defeated Crystal Palace, who included James McCarthy in their starting eleven, with the only goal of the match. Shane Long started for Southampton and was replaced by Michael Obafemi after 70 minutes of their four nil defeat by Liverpool at Anfield. U19 midfielder Will Smallbone was an unused substitute for the ‘Saints’. Ciaran Clark was in the Newcastle United side which played out a scoreless draw with St James Park visitors Norwich City while Matt Doherty was in action for Wolverhampton Wanderers as they also played out a scoreless draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Josh Cullen was in Championship action with loan club Charlton Athletic who secured a two one success over visitors Barnsley at The Valley. Cyrus Christie was in the Fulham side which defeated Craven Cottage visitors Huddersfield Town by three goals to two while Harry Arter was a 62nd minutes substitute for the victors. Conor Masterson was again in the starting eleven for QPR who suffered a one nil home defeat by Bristol City at Loftus Road where Olamide Shodipo was a very late substitute for the hosts but Ryan Manning and the victors Callum O’Dowda remained on the substitute bench. Shaun Williams started with Jayson Molumby a late substitute for Millwall who earned  a scoreless draw at Sheffield Wednesday while Aiden O’Brien and Alex Pearce were unused substitutes. Dara O’Shea was again in the starting eleven for West Bromwich Albion who regained top spot with a two nil victory over Luton Town at the Hawthorns. Loanee Callum Robinson completed 90 minutes for the ‘Baggies’ while James Collins and Glenn Rea were in action with the ‘Hatters’.

In League One, Glenn Whelan started, with Paddy Madden a late substitute, for Fleetwood Town who defeated visitors Doncaster Rovers and Kieran Sadlier by two goals to one. Alan Judge was withdrawn at half-time as his Ipswich Town crashed to a four one home defeat by visitors Peterborough United for whom U21 midfielder Jack Taylor was again in action. Connor Ronan was in action with loan club Blackpool who went down to a two one defeat at Oxford United while Ronan Curtis was in the Portsmouth side which defeated visitors Sunderland by two goals to nil at Fratton Park. Chiedoze Ogbene was in the Rotherham United side which defeated visitors Burton Albion by three goals to two while Trevor Clarke was an unused substitute. Loanees Kieran O’Hara and Conor Shaughnessy started for Burton alongside Stephen Quinn and John Joe O’Toole. Zack Elbouzedi started for Lincoln City, but was withdrawn at half-time, as they went down to a two one defeat at Southend United but Conor Coventry was unused on the substitute bench.
