The Championship on Wednesday evening…10/04/2019

The Championship continued on Wednesday evening with promotion contenders Aston Villa and Sheffield United facing away contests at Rotherham United and Birmingham City respectively. Conor Hourihane started with Glenn Whelan on the ‘Villians’ substitute bench as they secured a two one victory despite being reduced to ten men after thirty four minutes and falling behind following a penalty kick. The ‘Blades’ included John Egan, Enda Stevens and David McGoldrick in their starting eleven with Aston Villa loanee Scott Hogan on their substitute bench and it was Stevens who put them in front with a stunning strike on thirty eight minutes. Their joy was short lived however as the hosts equalised four minutes later and that was how the contest ended. Alan Judge, who has just signed an extended contract with Ipswich Town, started in their two nil defeat at Brentford which leaves them on the brink of relegation to the First Division. Millwall included Derby County loanee Alex Pearce in their starting eleven with Aiden O’Brien a late substitute and Shaun Williams unused on the substitute bench for the scoreless draw with visitors Queens Park Rangers who included Ryan Manning in their starting eleven.

Senior Women fall to Italy…09/04/2019

Our senior women, under the guidance of Head Coach Colin Bell, went down to a two one defeat by hosts Italy in a friendly international played in Reggio Emilia this afternoon.  Ireland stunned their hosts with the opening goal after just three minutes which was scored by captain Katie McCabe of Arsenal. Italy, who are preparing for the FIFA World Cup Finals set for France in June, equalised after forty minutes and then took the lead eight minutes into the second half. Ireland did have some opportunities to equalise but their finishing lacked the necessary accuracy and composure. This nevertheless was an instructive outing and should prove useful as we prepare for the  commencement of our 2021 European Championship qualifying campaign  against Montenegro on Tuesday the 3rd September 2019 in Tallaght.

Our own RISSC (London) club member James McManus made his Republic of Ireland international debut in Tuesday afternoon’s U14 international against Holland in the AUL Complex, Clonshaugh. Ireland went down to a three one defeat with our goal being scored by James who turned fourteen last month. Our warmest congratulations go out to James with our very best wishes for the future.

The two sides met again at the same venue at noon on Thursday and while ETP National Co-Ordinator Niall Harrison utilised the remining players from his twenty two member squad, James was introduced as a second half substitute and contributed to the Ireland goal in their two one defeat.
