With the European Championship Elite Stage on the March horizon, Under 19 Head Coach Tom Mohan has taken a twenty man squad to La Manga in Spain where they will take on Romania in a double header set for Tuesday afternoon at 2pm and Thursday morning at 11am this week.

Our Under 17 squad, with Head Coach Colin O’Brien at the helm, make final preparation for next month’s European Championship Elite Stage when they face Turkey in a double header in Galway this week. Weather permitting, the sides are set to meet in Eamonn Deacy Park at 7pm on Tuesday evening and again at the same venue at 1pm on Thursday afternoon.

The Premier League continued on Sunday afternoon with Shane Long a late substitute for Southampton who went down to a two nil defeat by visitors Liverpool. In the Championship, Conor Hourihane and Scott Hogan both started for Aston Villa in their two nil Derby victory over visitors Birmingham City. Hogan led the line in fine style while Hourihane was inconspicuous until the eighty first minute when he hit a scorching second goal for the victors. Glenn Whelan saw substitute action for the final few minutes.

The first competitive contest of the 2018 season saw Cork City lift the President’s Cup for the third year in succession. The 2017 treble winners recovered from a two goal half-time deficit to score four second half goals for a deserved victory over Dundalk in Oriel Park.

Seamus Coleman returned to the Everton starting eleven for the Premier League visit of Crystal Palace this Saturday afternoon but was substituted at half-time as the ‘Toffees’ secured a three one victory. Shane Duffy and his Brighton & Hove Albion colleagues travelled to Stoke City and earned a point with a one all draw. while Burnley duo, Jeff Hendrick and Kevin Long started with the fit again Stephen Ward on the bench in their one nil defeat at Swansea City. Ireland U21 duo Declan Rice and Josh Cullen were both on the West Ham United bench for the two nil victory over visitors Watford. Rice saw some brief action in the closing minutes.

Brentford had John Egan back in the starting eleven with Alan Judge a late substitute in the one all draw with visitors Preston North End who included Greg Cunningham, who was dismissed on seventy four minutes, and Alan Browne in their starting eleven with Daryl Horgan a very late substitute. The injury sustained by Callum O’Dowda at Hull City on the 25th November last continues to rule him out of the Bristol City squad as his side today squandered a three nil half-time lead as visitors Sunderland earned a point with three second half goals. John O’Shea started for the ‘Makems’ with Aiden McGeady a seventy first minute substitute and goal scorer ten minutes later. Enda Stevens retained his starting position for Sheffield United who defeated Leeds United and Eunan O’Kane by two goals to one at Bramall Lane in the early kick-off. Runaway leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers had Matt Doherty in their starting eleven for the two one victory over visitors Queens Park Rangers.
