EA Sports Cup contest on Monday evening…23/04/2018
The EA Sports Cup second round fixture between Waterford and Cork City took place at the RSC on Monday evening and was a less fractious affair than their very testy league encounter seventeen days ago. The contest remained scoreless in normal time with both sides scoring once in extra-time to generate a penalty shoot-out which went the way of the hosts by five goals to three. The ‘Blues’ will travel to face Sligo Rovers in the quarter-final.

There was disappointment for Shane Long and his Southampton colleagues as they went down to a two nil defeat by Chelsea in the second semi-final of the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium this Sunday afternoon. There was also Premier League disappointment for Declan Rice and his West Ham United colleagues as they suffered a four one defeat by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium where Josh Cullen was an unused substitute. The Burnley duo of Stephen Ward and Kevin Long started with Jeff Hendrick a late substitute and lohg time injury absentee Jon Walters unused on the substitute bench as they played out a one all draw at Stoke City which, barring a huge collapse, should guarantree them European football next season.

Brentford (John Egan) defeated West London rivals Queens Park Rangers (Ryan Manning) by two goals to one while Preston North End (Greg Cunningham, Alan Browne, Sean Maguire) were held to a scoreless draw by visitors Norwich City (Wes Hoolihan). Ipswich Town lost by four goals to nil against play-off challengers Aston Villa (Conor Hourihane, Scott Hogan, Glenn Whelan) at Portman Road while Leeds United (Paudie O’Connor) overcame Barnsley by two goals to one at Elland Road.

The Airtricity League Premier Division continued on Friday evening with the Eir Sport cameras bringing live coverage of the Dalymount Park contest between Bohemian and Cork City which ended in a two nil victory for the visiting ‘Leesiders’. Current leaders Dundalk were held to a two all draw by visitors Derry City in Oriel Park while Waterford defeated their visitors Bray Wanderers by three goals to nil in the RSC. Shamrock Rovers were held to a one all draw by struggling Limerick in Tallaght Stadium.

London rivals and Championship promotion challengers Millwall and Fulham went head to head at the Den this Friday evening with the visiting ‘Cottagers’ scoring three unanswered second half goals for a merited victory which keeps their challenge for automatic promotion on track. The ‘Lions’ included Shaun Williams, who had a fine game, in their starting eleven while Aiden O’Brien for the hosts and Cyrus Christie for the visitors received just a few minutes of game time as very late substitutes.
