FAI Cup second round draw…27/07/2021


The draw for the second round of the 2021 Extra.ie FAI Cup took place on Tuesday the 27th July 2021. The fixtures are scheduled for the week ending 29th August 2021.

FAI Cup First Round weekend…25/07/2021

 

Sunday
The remaining six FAI Cup first round contests took place on Sunday with non-league duo Killester Donnycarney and Usher Celtic facing each other at 11am with the hosts prevailing by one goal to nil.. The second all non-league clash saw Crumlin United go down to a two one home defeat by St Mochtas’.  Non-League Liffey Wanderers exited the competition with a two nil home defeat by First Division Cobh Ramblers while  First Division newcomers Treaty United took Cup Holders Dundalk to extra-time before conceding the only goal in the Markets Field. Following their European exploits of Thursday evening, Bohemian travelled to non-league College Corinthians and earned  a comfortable five nil victory while the remaining fixture featured Sligo Rovers and Cork City in the Showgrounds where the visiting First Division strugglers emerged as deserved  three two victors.

Saturday

There were a further three contests completed in the first round of the FAI Cup today. Derry City progressed to round two with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out success over their hosts Drogheda United after the sides played out a one all draw after extra-time. Finn Harps were taken to extra-time by non-league Fairview Rangers before  the visiting Donegal side scored three times for victory. Later today, Longford Town welcomed non-league Bangor GGFC to Bishopsgate where they secured a comfortable five nil victory.  

Friday
The opening fixtures in the first round of the 2021 FAI Cup took place on Friday evening with favourites Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic progressing to round two with home victories over First Division sides Galway United (2-0) and Bray Wanderers (6-0). Athlone Town and Waterford played out an eight goal thriller with the visiting ‘Blues’ progressing with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out success. UCD defeated First Division leaders Shelbourne by two goals to nil at The Bowl while Wexford defeated visitors Cabinteely by three goals to nil. Non-League sides Kilnamanagh and Maynooth University Town defeated fellow non-league sides St Kevin’s Boys (4-1) and Malahide United (4-0) respectively.

Airtricity League action this weekend…18/07/2021


There were two Airtricity League Premier Division contests played on Friday evening with current goal difference leaders Shamrock Rovers travelling to Derry City where they recovered from a two goal deficit to defeat their hosts by four goals to two in the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. St Patrick’s Athletic joined the ‘Hoops’ on forty one points with a two nil victory over visitors Drogheda United in Richmond Park. 


Dundalk scored the only goal to defeat visitors Finn Harps in Oriel Park on Saturday afternoon to move up to sixth position.

Bohemian were held to a one all draw by bottom of the table visitors Longford Town while Sligo Rovers went down to a one nil defeat at Waterford on Sunday afternoon.

There were four Airtricity League First Division contests played on Friday evening with clear leaders Shelbourne travelling to Athlone Town where they secured a three one success while second place Galway United were held to a scoreless draw at Bray Wanderers. Third place Treaty United defeated fourth place UCD by two goals to one in the Markets Field  while bottom duo Wexford and Cork City played out a scoreless draw in Ferrycarrig Park.

The remaining fixture saw Cobh Ramblers score the only goal to defeat Cabinteely in St Colman’s Park on Saturday evening.

Irish Clubs in European action…22/07/2021

 

Bohemian and Dundalk were in Europa Conference League 2nd Qualifying Round first leg action on Thursday of this week. Bohemian travelled to Luxembourg where they scored the only goal through U21 international Ross Tierney to defeat Dudelange while Dundalk were held to a two all draw by Levadia Tallinn of Estonia in Tallaght Stadium. 

Shamrock Rovers have received  a bye to the third round where they will face the winners of the second round tie between Teuta of Albania and Inter Club d’Escaldes from Andorra. The Andorra side secured  a two nil first leg victory in Albania on Thursday evening.

The Airtricity League representatives in Europe played the second legs of their first qualifying round ties this week. 

Champions League representatives Shamrock Rovers performed valiantly as they sought to  overturn a two goal first leg deficit when the Champions of Slovakia, SK Slovan Bratislava visited Tallaght Stadium this Tuesday evening. The ‘Hoops’ took an early lead through a Graham Burke penalty and an excellent second goal from Richie Towell early in the second half raised hopes but a goal from the visitors, which was hotly contested  because of a perceived foul in the build-up, ended their hopes of progression in this competition. The ‘Hoops’ will now enter the Conference League at the third qualifying round stage.

Conference League representatives Dundalk held a commanding four goal advantage as they travelled to face Newtown AFC in Wales on Tuesday evening where they consolidated their position with a one nil victory to progress on a five nil aggregate scoreline. The ‘Lilywhites’ will face Levadia Tallinn of Estonia in the second qualifying round with the first leg set for Oriel Park at 8pm on Thursday the 22nd July with the second leg one week later.

Following their one all first leg draw, Bohemian welcomed Icelandic side St Jarnan to Dalymount Park on Thursday evening where they secured  a three nil victory for a four one aggregate success. The ‘Gypsies’ will travel to face Dudelange of Luxembourg in the second round first leg on Thursday the 22nd July with the second leg set for the Aviva Stadium one week later.

Sligo Rovers exited the competition when they went down to a two one home defeat by Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjordur in the Showgrounds this Thursday evening for an aggregate three one deficit.

This weekend in the Airtricity League…10/07/2021


With t
he commencement of the European Competitions this week, the Airtricity League Premier Division has just three scheduled fixtures this weekend. Third place St Patrick’s Athletic scored the only goal to defeat visitors Derry City to Richmond Park on Friday evening while Finn Harps went down to a one nil defeat at home to visitors Waterford earlier in the evening.

Struggling Longford Town scored  a late equaliser to earn a point from a one all draw with visitors Drogheda United in Bishopsgate on Saturday evening.

There was a full Airtricity League First Division programme played on Friday evening with all five fixtures kicking-off at 7.45pm.  Treaty United scored a 90th minute equaliser to draw one each with leaders Shelbourne in the Markets Field while second place Galway United overcame visitors Cobh Ramblers by two goals to nil in Eamonn Deacy Park. Cabinteely suffered  a one nil home defeat by visitors Athlone Town while Cork City and Bray Wanderers played out a two all draw in Turner’s Cross. Bottom side Wexford journied to The Bowl where they went down to a two one defeat by UCD.

Irish clubs in European action this week…08/07/2021


All four Airtricity League representative were in First Qualifying round European action this week.

League champions Shamrock Rovers travelled to Slovakia where they went down to a two nil defeat by SK Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday afternoon in the Champions League.  Irish League champions Linfield, who signed former Dundalk captain Chris Shields last week, travelled to Lithuania where they suffered  a three one defeat by FK Zalgiris in Vilnius on Tuesday evening. Welsh League champions Connah’s Quay Nomads played out a two all draw with visitors Alashkert of Armenia, also on Wednesday evening.

Bohemian, Dundalk and Sligo Rovers were in First Qualifying Round action in the newly introduced Europa Conference League on Thursday evening. Bohemian and Sligo Rovers both travelled to Iceland where they faced St Jarnan and FH Hafnarfjordur respectively while Dundalk played host to Newtown AFC of Wales.

The ‘Lilywhites’ cruised to a comprehensive four nil victory in Oriel Park while Ireland U21 striker Ross Tierney scored  a second half equaliser for Bohemian to earn a one all draw.  Following the dismissal of captain Greg Bolger, Sligo Rovers  conceded an 85th minute goal to suffer a one nil defeat.

Other Clubs from the Irish and Welsh Leagues were also in Europa Conference League action on Thursday evening.
