Our Senior Women provided a much improved performance against hosts Portugal in the Azores this afternoon to secure a three one success. Goals from captain Katie McCabe, Leanne Kiernan and Loise Quinn put Ireland in total command with the hosts scoring a late consolation goal.

U19 Women lose to England in Portugal tournament…21/01/2018

Following their opening defeat by hosts Portugal our U19 Women met England at the Santo Antonio venue on Friday afternoon. Despite a much improved performance, against stronger opposition, our side went down to a three one defeat with Saoirse Noonan scoring our goal. A further contest, against hosts Portugal, is also scheduled for Santo Antonio at 2pm Irish time on Sunday afternoon.

Misfiring Southampton were without Shane Long for the Premier League visit of in-form Tottenham Hotspur to St Marys Stadium this Sunday afternoon, but seventeen year old striker Michael Obafemi made his Premier League debut with a substitute entry for the final fifteen minutes, as the sides played out a one all draw. Dublin born Obafemi is a member of Tom Mohan’s U19 Republic of Ireland squad. Obafemi has scored twelve goals at Youth Level for Southampton this season where his attack partner Jonathan Afolabi is another member of our U19 squad.

Shane Duffy and his Brighton & Hove Albion colleagues went down to a four nil Premier League defeat by visitors Chelsea at the Amex Stadium in the early kick-off this Saturday afternoon. Jeff Hendrick started with Kevin Long on the bench for Burnley who lost to the only goal from Manchester United to Turf Moor. James McCarthy started but was substituted on sixty minutes while James McClean was introduced from the bench on seventy nine minutes as Everton were held to a one all draw by visitors West Bromwich Albion. Irish U21 duo, Declan Rice and Josh Cullen were both on the substitute bench for West Ham United who were held to a one all draw by AFC Bournemouth at the London Stadium. The late kick-off saw Manchester City overcome visitors Newcastle United by three goals to one. Ciaran Clark started for the visitors with Rob Elliot on the substitute bench.

The Championship continued on Saturday afternoon with Aston Villa (Conor Hourihane, Scott Hogan, Glenn Whelan) defeating Barnsley by three goals to one at Villa Park, Hogan scored twice in the opening seven minutes with Hourihane adding the third on nineteen minutes. Bolton Wanderers held Ipswich Town (Stephen Gleeson, David McGoldrick, Aaron Drinan) to a one all draw while Leeds United (Conor Shaughnessy) went down to a four three defeat by Millwall at Elland Road with Aiden O’Brien scoring the opener. Norwich City (Wes Hoolihan) went down by two goals to one against Sheffield United (Enda Stevens) at Carrow Road. Preston North End (Greg Cunningham, Alan Browne, Daryl Horgan) drerw one each with Birmingham City at Deepdale while QPR went down to a three nil home defeat by Middlesbrough (Darren Randolph, Cyrus Christie). Reading (Liam Kelly) suffered a one nil home defeat by Brentford with Martin O’Neill rumoured to be a possible attendee. Sunderland (John O’Shea, Aiden McGeady) scored the only goal for victory over Hull City (David Meyler, Will Keane) at the Stadium of Light while leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers (Matt Doherty) suffered a shock two nil home defeat by Nottingham Forest.

High flying Derby County, skippered by Richard Keogh, did not manage to exact revenge for the four one defeat they suffered at Ashton Gate in the first half of this season when Bristol City held them to a scoreless draw at Pride Park in the Championship this Friday evening.

Head Coach Colin Bell was disappointed by the performance of his Ireland Senior Women’s side in their one nil defeat by hosts Portugal in the Azores on Thursday evening. The winning goal came from the penalty spot on sixty minutes. The sides will meet again on Monday afternoon.

Following their opening defeat by hosts Portugal our U19 Women next meet England at the Santo Antonio venue on Friday afternoon at 5pm. A further contest, against hosts Portugal, is also scheduled for Santo Antonio at 2pm Irish time on Sunday afternoon.

Ireland U21 duo, Josh Cullen and Declan Rice will be hoping to see FA Cup third round replay action on Tuesday evening when their West Ham United take on League One side Shrewsbury Town at the London Stadium. Also set for cup replay action are Reading duo Paul McShane and Liam Kelly when their Reading host Stevenage of League Two.
