Sunday action for Irish internationals…10/11/2019

Save for the doubts surrounding Scott Hogan, who was not in the Stoke City squad this afternoon, there have been no reports of any casualties from the Saturday afternoon action, Ireland manager Mick McCarthy will be keeping a keen eye on the senior squad players likely to be in action with their clubs this Sunday afternoon.

First into action at noon was Callum O’Dowda whose Bristol City scored the only goal to defeat their hosts Cardiff City in what was surprisingly, a less than torrid Championship encounter. Playing in a central midfield role, O’Dowda had a fine game.

A couple of hours later at 2pm, Aaron Connolly and Shane Duffy both started for Brighton & Hove Albion who went down to a three one defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Connolly was fairly quiet and was withdrawn at half-time with a groin injury. He is set to have a scan on Monday morning to determine the extent of the injury. Matt Doherty was in fine form for Wolverhampton Wanderers who defeated Aston Villa by two goals to one at Molineaux while Conor Hourihane was an unused substitute for vanquished Villa.

Irish in Saturday afternoon action…09/11/2019

Premier League
Jeff Hendrick started for Burnley in their three nil Premier League victory over West Ham United at Turf Moor this Saturday afternoon while Robbie Brady played the final four minutes with Kevin Long unused on the substitute bench.  Ciaran Clark retained his place and scored the winning goal for Newcastle United in their two one victory over AFC Bournemouth at St James Park. U21 striker Michael Obafemi was introduced from the substitute bench for the final five minutes of Southampton’s two one home defeat by Everton while Shane Long, surprisingly overlooked by Mick McCarthy, was not in the matchday squad. Seamus Coleman was unused on the visiting substitute bench. Sheffield United had John Egan, Enda Stevens and David McGoldrick in their starting eleven with Callum Robinson playing the final ten minutes of their one all draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

Championship

Troubled Stoke City, with newly appointed manager Michael O’Neill  in command, journied to Barnsley where James McClean and Stephen Wards started in their four two victory which sees them leapfrog their opponents at the foot of the Championship league table. Blackburn Rovers included Derrick Williams in their starting eleven and he scored their goal in their two one defeat by Leeds United at Elland Road. Our U21 captain Jayson Molumby started for Millwall who defeated Charlton Athletic and Josh Cullen by two goals to one at  the New Den. Mick McCarthy confirms revised squad…07/11/2019

Mick McCarthy has confirmed his revised 28 man squad for the upcoming friendly international against New Zealand on Thursday 14 November followed by the crucial European Championship qualifier against Denmark on Monday 18 November with both matches scheduled for the Aviva Stadium.

U21 defender Lee O’Connor, who is suspended for the Armenia match has been added to the senior squad and McCarthy has indicated that he may play a part against New Zealand. It is surprising that U21 captain Jayson Molumby, who is also suspended for the Armenia fixture, has not been added on the same basis.

Excluded from the provisional squad are:- Keiren Westwood, Caoimhin Kelleher (with the U21s), Cyrus Christie, Nathan Collins (with the U21s), Darragh Lenihan, Ryan Manning, James McCarthy (personal withdrawal), Ronan Curtis, Shane Long, Aidan O’Brien, Michael Obafemi(with the U21s) and Kieran Sadlier.

With the nagging injury doubt relating to Darren Randolph, the exclusion of the experienced Keiren Westwood is a surprise while the continued exclusion of Shane Long is difficult to fathom.

Matt Doherty set to start in Europa League…07/11/2019

Matt Doherty, who picked a knee injury against Arsenal last Saturday and was substituted, started for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Europa League meeting with Slovan Bratislava at Molineaux this Thursday evening. Doherty completed the full 90+ minutes and was in excellent form as his side secured a one nil victory with the goal coming in the final minutes of the match.

Also in Europa League action this Thursday evening were Glasgow Celtic who travelled to face Italian side Lazio and came from behind to secure  a two one victory with the winning goal coming in the fifth minute of added time. Jonny Hayes has been used quite extensively from the substitute bench for the Scottish side this season but started in the left back position this evening and completed the full 90+ minutes.

Stephen Kenny announces U21 squad…07/11/2019

Manager Stephen Kenny has announced his 22 player Republic of Ireland U21 squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifying contests against Armenia and Sweden. We face Armenia in Yerevan at 11am on Thursday the 14th November and Sweden in Tallaght Stadium at 8pm on Tuesday the 19th November 2019.

In a hugely competitive Group One where Ireland are seeded fourth behind Italy, Iceland and Sweden, the first match in Yerevan will be hugely significant with victory almost certainly being required.

Kenny‘s squad has been hugely impacted upon by the promotion of Aaron Connolly and Troy Parrott to the senior ranks, the injuries which rule out Jonathan Afolabi, Luca Connell and Darragh Leahy and the suspensions of captain Jayson Molumby and Lee O’Connor for the Armenia fixture. The latter two will link up with the squad for the Sweden fixture five days later in Tallaght.

There are three new additions to the squad, defender Thomas O’Connor, midfielder Jack Clarke and striker Aidan Keena.
