Friday
Southampton continued their fine form with a two nil Premier League victory over visitors Norwich City in St Mary’s Stadium this evening. Shane Long was an 83rd minute substitute for the ‘Saints’.  

Thursday
Glasgow Celtic were in Norway for the second leg of their European Conference contest with Boda/Glimpt and following their three one first leg loss suffered  a two nil defeat to exit the competition. Liam Scales started but endured a very tough evening while James McCarthy was introduced from the substitute bench on 76 minutes and probably wished he had remained there.  

Wednesday
Burnley duo Nathan Collins and Kevin Long were unused substitutes for their one nil Premier League victory over visitors Tottenham Hotspur for whom Matt Doherty was also unused on the bench.

Derby County included Jason Knight, Festy Ebosele and Eiran Cashin in their starting eleven for their two one Championship defeat by visitors Millwall and Danny McNamara. Troubled Peterborough United and Sam Szmodics went down to a two one defeat by leaders Fulham at Craven Cottage. Cardiff City included Mark McGuinness and Joel Bagan in their starting eleven for their their two one defeat at Huddersfield Town. QPR included Jimmy Dunne , who scored the opening goal, and loanee Jeff Hendrick in their starting eleven for their two one victory over visitors Blackpool. Bramall Lane hosted the meeting of Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers with John Egan starting and loanee Conor Hourihane unused on the bench for the ‘Blades’ who scored the added time winner despite being reduced  to ten men early in the second half. Captain Darragh Lenihan returned to the visitors starting eleven following suspension.

Tuesday
Hull City included Sean McLoughlin in their starting eleven for their surprise two nil defeat by visitors Barnsley in the Championship. Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Aaron Connolly was in the Middlesbrough side which came from behind to defeat visitors West Bromwich Albion by two goals to one. Irish duo Dara O’Shea and loanee Jayson Molumby both started with Molumby scoring the Albion goal while Callum Robinson  was a 76th minute substitute. Preston North End and Alan Browne played out a scoreless  draw with visitors Nottingham Forest at Deepdale. Reading included young Kian Leavy on their substitute bench for their two one victory over visitors Birmingham City.
 
League One 
continued this evening with MK Dons and their trio of Warren O’Hora and loanees Conor Coventry and Troy Parrott securing a two nil victory at Charlton Athletic. Also on the road  were Oxford United who included Mark Sykes and Luke McNally in their starting eleven for their one nil success at Crewe Alexandra. Loanee Ademipo Odubeko was a 65th minute substitute for Doncaster Rovers who defeated visitors Accrington Stanley by two goals to nil. Current leaders Rotherham United who overcame visitors Morecambe by two goals to nil introduced Chiedoze Ogbene as a 58th minute substitute while Joshua Kayode remained on their bench. There was a road trip to Shrewsbury Town for Portsmouth who included loanee Gavin Bazunu, Ronan Curtis,
Sean Raggett and loanee Aiden O’Brien in their starting eleven with Marcus Harness a half-time substitute in their  two one victory. Sunderland and Dennis Cirkin were held to a one all draw by Burton Albion in the Stadium of Light. Wycombe Wanderers went down to a three one home defeat by was an 8pm kick-off for the meeting of Bolton Wanderers and Lincoln City with Anthony Scully in action with the visitors who suffered  a three one defeat in which half-time substitute Kieran Sadlier scored.     

Crystal Palace loanee Jake O’Brien was in League Two action with Swindon Town who crushed visitors Walsall by five goals to nil at the County Ground.

 

 

Weekend of overseas action…20/02/2022

 

Sunday
The Scottish Premiership continued on Sunday afternoon with Glasgow Celtic extending their lead at the summit with a three two victory over visitors Dundee. Surprisingly both Liam Scales  and James McCarthy were not included in the matchday squad.

Josh Cullen and RSC Anderlecht were in Belgium First Division action when they defeated visitors KRC Genk by two goals to nil on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday
The Premier League saw Brighton & Hove Albion with Shane Duffy in their starting eleven and Evan Ferguson a 68th minute substitute go down to a three nil home defeat by visitors Burnley who included Nathan Collins in their starting eleven with Kevin Long on their bench. Caoimhin Kelleher was on bench duty for Liverpool who came from behind to defeat visitors Norwich City by three goals to one. A knee injury sustained in training is expected to rule Adam Idah out for the remainder of the season.  Southampton included Shane Long and Will Smallbone on their substitute bench for the visit of Everton and captain Seamus Coleman with the hosts securing a comfortable two nil victory with 83rd minute substitute Long scoring sixty seconds after his introduction. Crystal Palace included young Tayo Adaramola  on their substitute bench for their one nil defeat by visitors Chelsea. The late kick-off saw Manchester City go down to a very unexpected  three two defeat by visitors Tottenham Hotspur for whom Matt Doherty was an 83rd minute substitute.

The Scottish Premiership  featured Livingston at home to St Mirren who included Connor Ronan, Joe Shaughnessy, Charles Dunne and Alan Power in their side with Conor McCarthy on the bench as the sides played out a one all draw. The ‘Buddies’ have lost manager Jim Goodwin who has taken the vacant Aberdeen managerial position on a 21/2  year deal. Motherwell included Jake Carroll in their starting eleven with Ross Tierney on their bench for their one all draw with visitors Aberdeen and Jonny Hayes. Recent signings Dan  Cleary who started and John Mahon who was on the substitute bench were members of the St Johnstone side which defeated visitors Heart of Midlothian by two goals to one. Aaron McEneff  was an unused substitute for the defeated visitors.

The Championship saw Bristol City defeat visitors Middlesbrough and Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Aaron Connolly by two goals to one. Bagan was again their goal scorer, his third in consecutive matches. A battling  Derby County included Jason Knight, Festy Ebosele and debutant Eiran Cashin in their starting eleven for their crucial relegation contest with visitors Peterborough United which they won with the only goal in added time. Peter Kioso was a late substitute  for Luton Town who defeated visitors West Bromwich Albion by two goals to nil. Dara O’Shea was an unused substitute with Callum Robinson a 78th minute substitute while Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Jayson Molumby started for the ‘Baggies’. Captain Alan Browne was in the Preston North End side which suffered  a three two defeat by visitors Reading. Jimmy Dunne and Newcastle United loanee Jeff Hendrick started for QPR who were held to a one all draw by visitors Hull City and Sean McLoughlin.  Bramall Lane hosted the meeting of Sheffield United  and Swansea City  which saw John Egan start with Aston Villa loanee Conor Hourihane unused on the bench as the ‘Blades’ cruised  to a four nil victory. League One featured Charlton Athletic in action against visitors Oxford United and Mark Sykes with the ‘Students’ securing a resounding four nil victory. West Ham United loanee Ademipo Odubeko, started for Doncaster Rovers who went down to a three one defeat by visitors Sheffield Wednesday for whom Ciaran Brennan was a starter. Sunderland included Dennis Cirkin in their starting eleven for the visit of promotion chasing MK Dons who included Warren O’Hora and loanees Conor Coventry and Troy Parrott in their side as they gained  a two one victory. Daryl Horgan started for Wycombe Wanderers who played host to Cheltenham Town as the sides played out a five all draw .

League Two Swindon Town included Crystal Palace loanee Jake O’Brien in their side for the lengthy journey to Carlisle United where they gained  a three nil victory.  Lee O’Connor started for Tranmere Rovers who were held to a one all draw by visitors  Port Vale.

 

Domestic Season kicks-off on Friday evening…19/02/2022


The domestic League of Ireland season kicked-off on Friday evening with three SSE Airtricity League Premier Division fixtures completed. The concerns that the match between Finn Harps and Drogheda United in Ballybofey could fall victim to the impact of Storm Eunice were confirmed with the contest postponed. 


Defending champions Shamrock Rovers welcomed promotion play-off winners UCD to Tallaght Stadium and gained a comfortable three nil victory. Dundalk, with former club captain Stephen O’Donnell in the managerial seat,  played out a two all draw with visitors Derry City who have assembled a significant squad. Promoted First Division champions Shelbourne, with Damien Duff at the helm, went down to a three nil defeat by  St Patrick’s Athletic in Tolka Park with the match covered live by RTE. 

The remaining contest between Sligo Rovers and Bohemian set for the Showgrounds on Saturday night has been postponed as a consequence of Storm Eunice.

The nine team Airtricity League First Division also kicked-off on Friday evening with three completed contests.

Athlone Town went down to a five two defeat by visitors Waterford who suffered relegated last season. The Bray Wanderers title which has been retained following the amalgamation with Cabinteely suffered a harsh introduction with a crushing six nil defeat by visitors Cork City in the Carlisle Grounds. The remaining fixture between Wexford FC and Treaty United in Ferrycarrig Park also went the way of the visiting side by five goals to one.

The scheduled meeting of Longford Town and Cobh Ramblers on Saturday evening has also fallen foul of the weather and is postponed.

Senior Women contest Pinatar Cup…16/02/2022

 


Our senior women took third place in the Pinatar Cup with a one nil victory over Wales in this afternoon’s play-off contest . An excellent strike from ‘Player of the Match’ Denise O’Sullivan on twenty five minutes settled the match. Head Coach Vera Pauw expressed delight with the performance of her charges throughout the three match competition. Ireland will next be in action when we travel to face Sweden in a daunting 2023 World Cup qualifier in April.

Our senior women went down to a one nil defeat by Russia in this evening’s semi-final of the Pinatar Cup. Manager Vera Pauw selected a completely new eleven starters for this evening’s contest. Ireland conceded a goal in the opening stages and looked very disjointed but after the opening twenty minutes we stabilised with Leanne Kiernan, twice and Amber Barrett going close.  Two changes were made at half-time and four more during the second period but we were unable to find the equaliser and will now contest the third place play-off on Tuesday. Debutant defender Chloe Mustaki was named ‘Player of the Match’.

Ireland will face Wales, who lost their semi-final to Belgium in a penalty shoot-out following a scoreless draw. in the third place play-off at 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoon in the Pinatar Arena.

Our senior women recovered  from the concession of a goal from a penalty given for handball against centurion captain Niamh Fahey early in the second half to record  a two one victory over Poland in their opening Pinatar Cup contest in La Manga this afternoon. The equalising goal came on 52 minutes from Lucy Quinn and her namesake and Birmingham City colleague Louise Quinn powered home a header in the 75th minute for a deserved victory over the side ranked one place above Ireland on the FIFA rankings.

Ireland will face Russia. penalty shoot-out victors over Hungary, at 7.30pm (Irish Time) on Saturday evening in the semi-final stage.

Senior Women’s Team Manager Vera Pauw has selected  a 27 player squad for the Pinatar Cup invitation tournament being played in Murcia, Spain. We are guaranteed three matches with the opening fixture against Poland in La Manga at 2.30pm (Irish Time) on Wednesday afternoon. Subsequent opponents will be dictated by the opening round results. The winners of our opening contest will play the winners of the contest between Hungary and Russia while the losing sides from the two opening matches will face each other in the second phase on Saturday the 19th February.

Niamh Fahey, a previous excellent club guest, is set to win her 100th senior cap in the opening match against Poland.

In a late change to the squad, Chloe Mustaki has been called up to replace the injured Niamh Farrelly.

League One leaders Rotherham United and second place Wigan Athletic played out a one all draw at Millmoor this Friday evening. Ireland manager  Stephen Kenny was expected  to be in attendance with Chiedoze Ogbene, who started and provided  the assist for the ‘Millers’ goal, and 71st minute substitute Joshua Kayode members of the host squad while 71st minute substitute Will Keane and starter James McClean were involved with the visitors.

Thursday
Glasgow Celtic were in European Conference League action on Thursday night when they went down to a three one defeat by Norwegian side Bodo/Glimpt in Celtic Park. Liam Scales and James McCarthy were unused on the substitute bench.

Wednesday
There is more Championship action set for Wednesday evening with relegation candidates Peterborough United  and Reading meeting at London Road. The hosts include Sam Szmodics in their matchday squad but Jack Taylor remains on the injury list. 

Tuesday
There was Premier League action on Tuesday evening with Manchester United defeating visitors Brighton & Hove Albion by two goals to nil . Visiting captain Lewis Dunk was dismissed on 54 minutes while Shane Duffy and Evan Ferguson were unused on their substitute bench.

Aberdeen included Jonny Hayes in their starting eleven for the Scottish Premiership visit of St Johnstone for whom Dan Cleary started with John Mahon unused on their bench as the sides played out a one all draw.

The Championship continued on Tuesday evening with Cardiff City playing host to Coventry City. The ‘Bluebirds’ included Mark McGuinness and Joel Bagan in their starting eleven and Bagan scored a delightful opening goal on 72 minutes and was named ‘Man of the Match’ as the ‘Bluebirds’ secured  a two nil victory. The New Den hosted the clash of London rivals Millwall and QPR with Danny McNamara for the ‘Lions’ in opposition to the visitors Jimmy Dunne as the hosts secured  a two nil victory. Newcastle United loanee Jeff Hendrick was unused on the bench for QPR.. Sheffield United included John Egan and Aston Villa loanee Conor Hourihane in their starting eleven as they were held to a scoreless draw by visitors Hull City who included Sean McLoughlin in their side.

The Hawthorns hosted the Championship meeting of West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers which ended  scoreless on Monday evening. The hosts included Callum Robinson and Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Jayson Molumby in their starting eleven with Dara O’Shea unused on the substitute bench while Darragh Lenihan missed out for the visitors through suspension.

Sunday
Kevin Long and Nathan Collins were unused substitutes for Burnley who went down to a one nil Premier League defeat by visitors Liverpool this afternoon at Turf Moor where Caoimhin Kelleher was an unused substitute for the victors. Matt Doherty was in the Tottenham Hotspur side which went down to a two nil home defeat by visitors Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Championship meeting of Swansea City and Bristol City saw Ryan Manning  return to the starting eleven after suspension alongside Michael Obafemi and Fulham loanee Cyrus Christie for the hosts with goalkeeper Max O’Leary starting for the visitors. The ‘Robins’ took a first half lead but Obafemi equalised on 54 minutes and Christie put them in front on 79 minutes with a further goal coming in added time for a three one victory. An injury forced  the withdrawal of O’Leary after 63 minutes.

Seamus Coleman scored after 10 minutes for  Everton who defeated Leeds United  by three goals to nil at Goodison Park. Watford went down to a two nil defeat by visitors Brighton & Hove Albion for whom Shane Duffy appeared for the final two minutes at Vicarage Road. 

There was a 12.30pm kick-off for the Championship meeting of Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United which ended scoreless. John Egan started while Aston Villa loanee Conor Hourihane was an unused substitute for the ‘Blades’. Barnsley shocked visitors QPR with the only goal at Oakwell where  the visitors included Jimmy Dunne and Newcastle United loanee Jeff Hendrick in their starting eleven with Hendrick withdrawn on 62 minutes. Blackpool went down to a two one defeat by visitors AFC Bournemouth who included Mark Travers in their side. Sean McLoughlin was in action with Hull City who lost to the only goal from leaders Fulham. Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Aaron Connolly started and scored his first goal for Middlesbrough who defeated visitors Derby County by four goals to one. Jason Knight started while Festy Ebosele was a half-time substitute with Eiran Cashin unused on the bench. Millwall and Danny McNamara defeated visitors Cardiff City by two goals to one. The ‘Bluebirds’ included Mark McGuinness and Joel Bagan in their starting eleven with Bagan scoring their goal in added time. Wednesday
The Premier League continued this evening with Norwich City and Adam Idah playing out a one all draw with Crystal Palace at Carrow Road where the ‘Canaries’ scored after just 38 seconds with Idah providing the assist. Tottenham Hotspur went down to a three two defeat by visitors Southampton for whom Shane Long was an 88th minute substitute while Will Smallbone returned on the substitutes bench after his injury absence.

The Championship saw Blackburn Rovers captain Darragh Lenihan dismissed  for a second bookable offence on 53 minutes as his side went down to a two nil defeat by visitors Nottingham Forest.  Mark Travers was in action for AFC Bournemouth who returned  to second place with a three one victory over visitors Birmingham City  for whom Scott Hogan  was withdrawn on 54 minutes. Max O’Leary started for Bristol City who defeated visitors Reading by two goals to one. Callum O’Dowda was introduced from the bench on 68 minutes but was forced off through injury twenty minutes later. Mark McGuinness and Joel Bagan started for Cardiff City who crushed visitors Peterborough United  by four goals to nil. Nathan Collins and Kevin Long were unused substitutes for the ‘Clarets’.

Championship side Derby County included Jason Knight and Festy Ebosele in their starting eleven with Eiran Cashin on their bench for their three one victory over  visitors Hull City and Sean McLoughlin. An excellent goal and the ‘man of the match’ award went to Ebosele. Stoke City defeated visitors Swansea City by three goals to nil. The ‘Swans’ included their weekend match winner Michael Obafemi together with Fulham loanee Cyrus Christie in their starting eleven but were without without the suspended Ryan Manning.

In League One, Accrington Stanley defeated visitors Oxford United by two goals to nil with their opener scored  by John O’Sullivan. The ‘Students’ introduced Mark Sykes from their substitute bench on 55 minutes. AFC Wimbledon went down to a one nil defeat by current leaders Rotherham United who named Chiedoze Ogbene in their starting eleven with  Joshua Kayode a 56th minute substitute and recent signing Georgie Kelly unused on their their substitute bench. The winning goal was scored by Kayode four minutes after his introduction with Ogbene providing the assist.  Cheltenham Town came from behind to defeat visitors Sunderland and Dennis Cirkin by two goals to one. Doncaster Rovers included West Ham United loanee Ademipo Odubeko in their starting eleven for their one nil defeat by visitors Ipswich Town. Fleetwood Town named Kieran O’Hara and Anthony Pilkington on their bench with Pilkington introduced on 74 minutes as they played out a one all  draw with visitors MK Dons. Warren O’Hora, West Ham United loanee Conor Coventry and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Troy Parrott all completed the full ninety minutes for the visitors.  Lincoln City and Anthony Scully defeated visitors Morecambe by two goals to one with Scully providing the assist for the opening goal. Portsmouth named Manchester City loanee Gavin Bazunu, Ronan Curtis and Sean Raggett, who scored, in their starting eleven as they secured a two one victory over visitors Burton Albion. Marcus Harness and Sunderland loanee Aiden O’Brien were unused on the ‘Pompey’ bench. Sheffield Wednesday introduced Ciaran Brennan for the final minutes of their one nil victory over visitors Wigan Athletic for whom James McClean and Jamie McGrath were in their starting eleven.  Wycombe Wanderers again consigned Daryl Horgan to their substitute bench for their scoreless draw with visitors Shrewsbury Town.

League Two saw Tranmere Rovers and Lee O’Connor defeat visitors Swindon Town, who included Crystal Palace loanee Jake O’Brien in their side, by three goals to nil.
